How to Optimize for Voice Search
On this page
Google documents very little that is specific to voice, and that tells you where the work is. The voice-specific feature in its structured data guidance, speakable, covers news articles read aloud on smart speakers, and its documentation doesn’t say how assistants choose other spoken answers. So voice optimization is ordinary work done with spoken questions in mind: pages that answer a question in a sentence or two, and a Business Profile that is complete and accurate for “near me” and “open now” questions.
What Google documents for voice: speakable
Google’s documentation on speakable structured data is labeled beta. It says the Google Assistant uses speakable markup to answer topical news queries on smart speaker devices: when someone asks for news on a topic, the Assistant returns up to three articles from around the web and can play the marked sections aloud with text-to-speech, then sends the full article link to the user’s phone. The feature is for users in the U.S. with Google Home devices set to English and publishers that publish content in English.
So speakable is for news publishers. It does nothing for a service business page or a product guide. If you do publish news in English, Google recommends around 20 to 30 seconds of content, roughly two to three sentences, per speakable section.
Write for questions people say out loud
A spoken question can be a full sentence. Someone types “weather Austin” and says “what’s the weather like in Austin today.” They type “running shoes flat feet” and say “what are the best running shoes for flat feet.” Build pages that answer those sentences:
- Use question headings that match how people ask: who, what, where, when, how, why, and “near me.”
- Put a direct answer right under each heading, one to three sentences that make sense read on their own, before the detail.
- Cover the specific versions of a question people ask, not just the short keyword.
A spoken reply has no list of ten links to fall back on, so a short, self-contained answer fits the format.
Featured snippets and People Also Ask
The same answer blocks can serve featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes on the results page. Google’s documentation on featured snippets says its systems determine whether a page would make a good featured snippet and elevate it; you can’t mark a page as one. Structure helps by making the answer easy to find; it doesn’t guarantee selection.
Your Business Profile for local questions
Spoken searches can be local and ready to act: “near me,” “open now,” “call,” “directions to.” Google’s help on improving your local ranking says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results. For voice, that means:
- hours, including special hours for holidays
- phone number and address
- categories that describe what you do
- current information everywhere your business is listed
A wrong “open now” or a missing phone number is the kind of error a spoken answer passes straight to the customer.
Keep voice and AI answers separate
A voice assistant reading an answer aloud and an AI Overview on the results page are different surfaces, even when they draw on similar information. Being cited in AI features follows Google’s AI features guidance, which says there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Clear question-and-answer pages can help with both, but don’t turn a voice plan into an AI Overviews project, or the reverse.
What you can and can’t measure
Search Console’s Performance report groups data by queries, pages, countries, devices, search appearance and dates. None of those is “voice,” so spoken searches aren’t reported separately. Third-party “voice rank” figures are estimates.
Measure what the voice answer depends on instead:
- positions and featured snippet appearance for your question-style queries
- phone-call, direction and website actions from your Business Profile
- completeness and accuracy of the profile itself
If those are strong, you’ve done the part of voice optimization you control.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a separate voice search ranking to optimize for?
Google’s documentation doesn’t describe one. The voice-specific structured data it documents, speakable, is for news. For everything else, the work is clear answers to spoken questions and an accurate Business Profile.
Should I add speakable markup?
Only if you publish news in English. Google’s speakable documentation is in beta and describes news playback on smart speakers in the U.S. set to English; it doesn’t help ordinary business or blog pages.
Where should I start?
Rework your key pages around the questions customers ask aloud, with a short answer under each question heading, and keep your Business Profile hours, phone number and categories accurate.
